IFRA – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!
What is IFRA?
IFRA is the anacronym for the International Fragrance Association – an organization created in 1973 to promote fragrance products safety, security, and advantages globally. IFRA represents the voice and interests of the perfume industry worldwide and brings together the many different industry partners such as brands, fragrance manufacturers, essential oils suppliers, product developers and others.
IFRA is a member-based, self-regulatory organization that is recognized by governmental authorities and trade associations around the world. The members of IFRA produce about 80% of the global volume of fragrance. Its mission is “to promote the safe use of fragrance ingredients and mixtures for everyone’s enjoyment.”
IFRA Code of Practice and IFR Standards
To ensure safety and best practices in the industry, IFRA operates under a Code of Practice – procedures, rules, and regulations covering the manufacture and handling of all fragrance ingredients, mixtures, and applications that are assessed for safety by the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) and an independent Expert Panel for Fragrance Safety. Whether the ingredients are created by nature or created by scientists, IFRA and expert-partners test, monitor, and assess fragrance ingredients and set rules on how to use these materials safely. These safety assessments are the foundation for the IFRA Standards – the system to manage the safe use of the fragrance ingredients and mixtures. The system covers 12 categories representing ingredients used in the fragrance market in such products as scented candles, air fresheners, body lotions, creams, soaps, laundry detergents, perfume, scented oils, shampoo, hair conditioner, sun care, industrial and institutional cleaning products, and much more.
The IFRA Standards ban, limit, or set criteria for the use of certain ingredients and mixtures, based on scientific evidence and consumer insights. These Standards have guided fragrance creation for four decades, ensuring that you, your customers, and your family can trust that fragrance products are safe. These Standards are recognized world-wide and are compulsory for all IFRA members.
Is it Mandatory to Comply with IFRA Standards?
Fragrance ingredients and mixtures are subject to laws and regulations from international, regional, national, and local regulatory authorities. Examples of this might be the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) or California Proposition 65. Laws and regulations differ depending on ingredient, mixture, concentration, and product form. While IFRA Compliance is not law, it is highly desirable for any fragrance oil to be IFRA Compliant. Moreover, following IFRA Standards helps ensure that you are handling and using an ingredient safely. Ultimately individual companies are responsible for the safety and legality of products they place on the market.
