Beauty and Personal Care trends are cyclical. Over the past few decades, we’ve seen phases that have gone from bare-skinned and nature-based to the bizarre and downright weird!

Take a trip down personal care memory lane with us: the 1920’s introduced the suntan oil trend, when everyone wanted to sport a sunkissed, bronze look. The 30’s and 40’s were dedicated to elaborate skincare routines involving cleansing and face creams. Until the 60’s, no one feared the sun and its effects on skin. However, the next few decades saw the growth of products incorporating SPF protection. We also witnessed the growth of chemicals in skincare products, designed to fight acne and wrinkles. Welcome to “the anti-aging era”!

The 2000s saw an increase in Botox injections in an effort to freeze the skin’s youthfulness. The 2010’s seem to be harking back to the 10 step routines that were the norm in the 1930’s. Over the last few years, K-beauty products have been boggling our minds with their bee venom and snail face masks, honey creams, and 24k gold sheet masks! Now, J-beauty products are gaining traction in the US, and they have equally exotic ingredients. What an exciting time for skin and personal care!

Below are this year’s top trends – new for the year or matured from previous seasons.

1. Pro-aging

Pro-aging is accepting – and embracing – aging as an inevitable phenomenon. There is an attitude of growing older gracefully – which lessens the fear of aging, as well as the use of cosmetics in an effort to cover up wrinkles. Pro-aging embraces all women by promoting skincare that is age-appropriate, nourishing and enriching. 2018 saw the rise of brands that sent out pro-aging messages. This trend will only mature over the next few years as society ages, and women (as well as men!) embrace this inclusive attitude.

2. Portable and Multi-Functional Products

Our hectic, on-the-go lifestyles require travel-friendly, multi-functional products that won’t spill or occupy much space. On-going for several years, 2018 saw the continuation of this trend with several interesting launches such as facewash in the form of a small tablet that dissolves in water ; a compact packaging unit that can hold multiple cosmetics stacked one on top of the other ; and multi-use balms that can be used for both hair and body.

3. Technology and Personal Care

For years, technology has been utilized to enhance the experience for personal care and beauty shoppers. Currently, facial recognition and eye tracking are being explored to find out shopper reactions to products. Face tracking is being designed to help treat skin conditions before and after product use. After shoppable Instagram posts helped potential customers be informed, interested and ready to shop within moments, Instagram has now come up with Shoppable Stories Stickers, designed to make shopping even easier.

4. Pollution Protection

Products designed to protect the skin from outdoor elements and pollution are not new. However, the latest products fight dust and germs in centrally heated or air-conditioned rooms. Also, some brands have launched products to de-stress the skin after extreme elemental conditions, or while traveling in public transports.

5. Food Traditions

Good-for-you food trends have been permeating skin and personal care for several years – such as honey, oats, milks and nut oils. However, the Japanese food tradition – washoku – is unique. In the Washoku tradition, food needs to have variety and balance, with an emphasis on seasonal produce that is fresh and local. The Japanese are bringing the same quality into their personal care. Some of the latest J-Beauty launches utilize local ingredients – such as soybean, white jelly mushroom, and loquat leaf – that leave the local beauties simply glowing.

What to expect in the next few years?

The trend for holistic care, and nourishment from the inside-out will continue to be on-trend. Practicality and inclusivity will also reign high. Technology will bring new depths of innovation that will continue to evolve today’s shoppers into informed super-consumers.
